Nictitating eyelid sky
omening leaf mould melancholia
mollusc ruminating spores/ spruce
pores sweat steamed [fungus]/ frog
needles old man’s beard <musk>
devil’s club seeps gloom.

Barbara Black recently won first prize in the 2018 Federation of BC Writers Literary Writes competition, was longlisted for the 2018 Commonwealth Short Story Prize, and won first prize in the 2017 Writers’ Union of Canada Short Prose Competition. Her writing has appeared in Prairie Fire, Freefall, CV2, and The New Quarterly. She has also collaborated with Canadian and American composers of new music as lyricist. She lives in Victoria, BC, where she enjoys riding the twisties on her motorcycle.
