Toronto: Self-promotion for poets (panel)

Join us at this panel on the opening day of our conference for a conversation about self-promotion for poets! Moderated by Christen Thomas, Executive Director of the Literary Press Group of Canada, hear from poet and critic Phoebe Wang, and spoken word organizer and legend Dwayne Morgan. Learn the ins and outs of using social media, word of mouth, and more, all to help you get more eyes and ears on your latest projects.

Events will be taking place on in accessible ground floor meeting rooms — there are several steps to get into the space, with a ramp available for access as well. Unfortunately, there is no elevator. Seating will be available.
DWAYNE MORGAN began his career as a spoken word artist in 1993. In 1994, he founded Up From The Roots entertainment, to promote the positive artistic contributions of African Canadian and urban influenced artists. Morgan is a 2016 finalist for the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Renaissance Planet Africa Award for Career Achievement, and was acknowledged by the Ontario Black History Society as a Community Trailblazer. In 2013, Morgan was inducted in to the Scarborough Walk of Fame. Morgan is a member of the Writers Union of Canada, a 2012 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word National Poetry Slam Champion, and has received both the African Canadian Achievement Award, and the Harry Jerome Award for Excellence in the Arts. Morgan is the winner of 3 Canadian Urban Music Awards (2001, 2003, 2005). In 2005, Morgan was recognized as Poet of Honour at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Vancouver, and in 2008 his contribution to the Arts and Canadian society were recognized on the Legacy Black History Month poster.
CHRISTEN THOMAS is Executive Director of the Literary Press Group of Canada, a national association of 60 Canadian literary book publishers. Christen serves on the board of eBOUND Canada and the Book and Periodical Council. Christen has poems published in more than 30 literary magazines, worked for several independent book publishers in various roles, and plays roller derby.
PHOEBE WANG was born in Ottawa and currently lives in Toronto, where she writes and teaches. She holds a BA in English from York University and a MA in Creative Writing from the University of Toronto. She is the author of two chapbooks, Occasional Emergencies (2013) and Hanging Exhibits (2016), and was the 2015 winner of Prism international‘s Poetry Contest. Admission Requirements is her debut collection of poetry. Phoebe is also a book reviewer and critic with a background in social media for non-profit organizations. She recently co-ordinated and co-hosted “Fuel for Fire,” and event for writers of colour, in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council.
