Kate was one of the founding directors of the Children's Peace Theatre, has been a High School Drama and English teacher, has taught in the primary grades, teaches teen yoga, and now gives teen leadership retreats on the Golden Rule. She has four books of poetry, the latest of which is "where we are going," and two CDs of poetry to musical soundscape. She gives dramatic readings in the classroom, guides in poetry creation, plays with imaginative editing, and playing with sound and word-- "soundpoems." She also works with young people delivering their poetry and spoken word, and has created "poetry-in-motion" blending poetry with movement.

Grade Levels: ALL

Fees: Standard

Classroom Approach: Kate gives readings, guides writing-on-the-spot exercises, leads a process of "Ode to myself" poems that celebrate their gifts and interests, plays with class jazz chants and soundpoems, can work with editing and performance of poetry with young people. She also shares her experiences and photos of "poeming" people in hospitals, parks and on the street in her years of working with "National Random Acts of Poetry." Kate's years of teaching English, Drama, yoga, dance, and performance really appeals to young people; she can create a safe space for exploration and risk-taking. Words come to life and students learn to trust the poetry within.
