A White Heron on the Path to South Korea

By Freddy Hyun Smith

A white heron stands still

in mud-sick water.

I have heard ducks babble

that when he speaks

his pauses gather dust

that shake off like snow

and his words

leave his mouth so

slowly, they make shapes.
