Thank you to our volunteers!

The League is grateful to all the poets and poetry lovers who donate their time and expertise to help make what we do possible. We are thrilled to celebrate all of our volunteers this week during National Volunteer Week.

We are also excited to celebrate some of our special recognition award winners this week: the inaugural winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2026 Colleen Thibaudeau Award winners, and our newest Life and Honorary members. Congratulations to these pillars of poetry and community!

2026 Special Recognition Awards

Colleen Thibaudeau Award for Outstanding Contribution

Thibaudeau (12)

2026 winners: Anne Hopkinson and Shane Neilson

Anne Hopkinson is the former President of Planet Earth Poetry a reading series of 30 years in Victoria. She writes of her time in Algeria, Rwanda, and the Dominican Republic, as well as her love of nature and human nature. She won the Canadian Stories Poetry Prize in 2019, the Emily Carr Poetry Contest in 2021. Her poems appear in journals and anthologies. Recently: The New Quarterly # 164, The Antigonish Review #209, and Grain Magazine, #51.2 Winter 2024, and forthcoming in Canadian Literature 2026, and in Sublime: Poems for Vanishing Ice by Caitlin Press 2026.

On receiving the Colleen Thibaudeau Award for Outstanding Contribution, Anne Hopkinson writes:

"It is an honour, a surprise, and a delight to receive the Colleen Thibaudeau award. I know there are many dedicated volunteers who contribute their time, skills, and energy to support poetry across Canada, and I am pleased to be one of them. The ongoing health of the Canadian poetry community is crucial. Poets, publishers, and audiences keep poetry alive and well, inclusive and diverse. We celebrate this at Planet Earth Poetry. Thank you – it is cherished."

Shane Neilson (mad; autistic) is a poet, physician, and critic from New Brunswick. His work has appeared in Poetry Magazine, Prairie Schooner, and Literature and Medicine. In 2025, What to feel, how to feel (Palimpsest Press, 2025), his book on neurofatherhood (his neologism for autistically parenting an intellectually disabled son) was a finalist for the Governor-General's Award for Nonfiction. His most recent book of poetry, The Reign (Goose Lane Editions, 2025), was named a 'Best Book of Poetry of 2025' by CBC Books. He served as a judge for the International Hippocrates Prize and published his first book in the UK with the Artel Press, both in 2025. Mostly, he does a too-rare thing: he teaches poetry to medical students.

On receiving the Colleen Thibaudeau Award for Outstanding Contribution, Shane Neilson writes:

"Being asked to comment on what it means to receive the Colleen Thibaudeau Award for Outstanding Contribution to Poetry provides me a rare opportunity to tell someone reading about my own mother, whose volunteering was always my model. She was the first woman to be the executive director of the Oromocto Minor Hockey Association; she rose to Dame Grand Cross of St. John Ambulance; and was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003 and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 - both of these for her volunteer work. In short, I could never, ever match her efforts and this fact makes me profoundly happy. If she were alive, she'd celebrate this with me. I thank the League, the example of Thibaudeau , and everyone else associated with the administration of this award for honouring quieter work done in service."

Honouring David C. Brydges' Legacy and Work (1952-2025)

David B

David C. Brydges (1952-2025) was a poet/pioneer, community activist for creativity, and literary
legacy builder. His vision was to bring the world more poets, poetry, and poetry
adventures.

David passionately believed in German poet Friedrich Hölderlin’s quote,

“Although we have to make a living, we dwell poetically on this earth.”

Within and without the League, his volunteerism has spread the power of poetry near and afar.

A few of David’s many accomplishments are listed below:

  • Founder/artistic director of the Spring Pulse Poetry Festival, Northern Ontario’s first poetry/arts festival, in 2008.
  • Creation of the first Poet Laureate position in Northern Ontario for Ann Margetson, who served her term as community ambassador until she died in 2021.
  • Administrator since 2008 for the Dr. William Henry Drummond National Poetry Contest (the oldest non-governmental poetry contest in Canada since 1970.
  • David founded an indie publishing press, Brydge Builder Press, and has published eight chapbooks and one full-length poetry book.
  • For the past 15 years, David was the only poet in Canada to write a poetry-themed column called The Poetry Pulse in a monthly local newspaper called The Voice.
  • David built Canada's most historic community poetry park, the Dr. Pollard Poetry Park, to honour Highway Book Shop owner Dr. Pollard and publisher for his work in promoting/supporting the literary community. The second memorial park was completed in 2023 beside the town library and is called the Dr. Drummond Memorial Park.
  • In 2025, David began teaching live Haiku 101 Playshops at his local senior residence, the North Bay Public Library, and the Temiskaming Shores Public Library.
  • Informally, he mentored many poets to get serious, get published, perform in public, and join poetry organizations.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Lifetime Achievement

Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award winner: DC Reid

DC Reid is an author and a steadfast advocate for the Canadian literary community, having served as the president for the Federation of BC Writers, Victoria Book Prize Society, and League of Canadian Poets. He has won more than twenty awards for his work, including the 2023 Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada gold medal for books for his memoir A Man and His River: a 25-year Love Affair with a Wild Island Waterway. In between fly-fishing trips, Reid has published 18 books including 11 collections of poetry, a novel, a work of literary nonfiction, and five books on fishing. His poems and stories have been published in magazines around the world, and his fishing articles have been published in magazines, newspapers, and on websites across North America. A 2015 PoeTrain Laureate, he holds a BSc in zoology and biochemistry from the University of Calgary, an Honours BA in English and philosophy from the University of Liverpool, and a master’s in public administration from the University of Victoria. His most recent book is Poems: Selected and New, published by Ekstasis Editions.

The award selection committee writes:

“DC Reid’s lifetime contributions to Canadian poetry—as a poet, editor, mentor, literary advocate, community leader, volunteer, and ground-breaking philanthropist— have been, and continue to be profound. A celebrated poet, his work draws inspiration from wide-ranging streams: philosophy, fly fishing, the science of creativity and brain research, the natural world, and his deep attention to work of other poets. He has published both print and web-based video poetry and his poems have been translated internationally in multiple languages. His philanthropic leadership in support of Canadian poets is writ large in funding created through multiple writing organizations, most notably in the $1.5 million endowment he established through the Writers Trust of Canada, a fund that administers eight grants annually. His unparalleled contributions to poetry as an enriching cultural and communal force absolutely support DC Reid as a truly worthy recipient of the League of Canadian Poets Lifetime Achievement Award.”

On winning the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award, DC Reid writes:

"I have been president of the League of Canadian Poets, Federation of BC Writers and Victoria Book Prize Society over the years. Way back in 1976, I attended the Banff School of Fine Arts as a prose writer. I was told to write down anything that came into my head, a W.O. Mitchell style of writing. One day, after doing my writing, Eli Mandel, then a well-known poet and friend of Margaret Atwood, looked over my sample and circled some of it. He said it was a poem and to write it in short lines.

After I did that, Mandel made me submit it to the Bliss Carmen Award. Much to my surprise my first ever poem won silver in the award. Since then, a large part of my output has been in poems, with my 11th book, Canada a Country of Poets and Human Writes, to be published in 2026. This book has won several awards prior to being published and, in total, I have had the good fortune to have won, or been a finalist for, 25 awards over the years. My work has been translated into 8 languages.

And here I am today, thankful to be awarded the League’s Lifetime Achievement Award after all these years and poems. I have been a League member for many decades, and it is quite the honour. Now, I am a member of the League’s Senior Poets Caucus. Thank you League of Canadian Poets."

2026 Life Membership Award: Michelle Poirier Brown

Michelle Poirier Brown is a Red River Métis poet and performer living on unceded syilx territory in Vernon, BC. In response to her 2022 book You Might Be Sorry You Read This (University of Alberta Press), CBC Books named her a Writer to Watch. A chapbook of poems and photographs, Intimacies, was published the same year by Jack Pine Press. Her work has been included in the League's Poetry Pause as well as in the chapbooks Splendour of Wings (2024), i am what becomes of broken branch (2020) and Tending the Fire (2020). Her work appears in numerous literary magazines and anthologies. Composer Jeffrey Ryan set four of her poems in the song suite The Length of a Day. Her poem “Wake” won PRISM international’s 2019 Earle Birney Prize. Other poems have  been honoured numerous times in competitions sponsored by the Federation of BC Writers, including First Prize and an Honourable Mention in 2025. Two current projects are a poetry installation what would you do if you weren’t afraid? as well as a long work setting her family history as a thread in the emergence of the Métis Nation. In addition to volunteer work she has done for the League and other literary organizations, Michelle collaborates with the Vernon Public Library on an ongoing series of poetry workshops and readings.

On receiving the Lifetime Membership Award, Michelle Poirier Brown writes:

“In Indigenous culture, our identity is embedded in our answer to the question, “who claims you?” It is a deep honour to have one’s membership acknowledged by the collective, an honour that is humbling and carries responsibilities. To be claimed is to be recognized and accepted. It is a profound experience, and for those who have been adrift, healing. To be claimed by the League of Canadian Poets is a recognition and acceptance that is similarly moving for me. I do, indeed, feel a kinship with the broad poetry community, especially the community of Indigenous poets I have met, many of them thanks to participating in League initiatives. To be invited to take a place of honour among the members of the League is to be invited to a richly laden feast. I am deeply grateful to the Members of the Board. kinanâskomitinâwâw.”
