rosettes

By Sara Tejani

Tangled threads

โ€“catch beneath the crescent

of my bitten thumbnail.

Each pull,

loosening another.

The frayed threadโ€™

slips from the needleโ€™s eye.

I can see rosettes,

before theyโ€™ve reached

the cloth.

The needle hesitates,

catches,

then finds its place again.

Sheโ€™ll knot it beneath her chin,

drag it across the living room floor,

โ€“for her.

Iโ€™ll watch her twirl in it

โ€“round and round

cocooning herself.

Her hazel curls spilling

beneath folds.

Somewhere

beneath the rosettes,

every knot

holds my hands.
