Before the Internet

By Catherine St. Denis

It was you, with a lisp

of raspberry at your lips, me,

a blade of quackgrass strung

between thumbs, and the sun

kilning us into history.

Catherine St. Denis’ poetry has appeared in a variety of literary journals including The Malahat Review, Canthius, Rattle, The Humber Literary Review, and Arc. She was a finalist for PEN Canada’s New Voices Award for the last two years, and her work is forthcoming in the anthology Best Canadian Poetry 2025.
