Into the soft spring air
By Janis La Couvée
thrumming with frenetic energy –
wee birds twitter and cavort
flit from thicket to wood
in search of string and twig
peck at insects hidden in the understory
overhead eagles call
their cry a plaintive echo
above the treetops
swoop and swirl, catch the updraft
lazy circles in a pale blue sky
faint silhouette among scudding white clouds
the land – bruised, battered,
beaten down by rain and snow – awakes
covered in soft green fuzz,
the beginnings of new life
bud and blossom, leaf unfurling
ramrod straight poker, a blaze of yellow
thrusts forth in swamp and backwater
scents of mowed grass and barbeque
waft over backyards
sniff for cherry blossom and forsythia
breathe deep
