Lightning Bolts

By Faelina Robinson

Unsteady hands yanked the hide as hard as I could.

Itโ€™s stronger than I expected.

10 year old me persisted with focus,

as the Elders would.

The wolf effortlessly printed onto paper,

but painstakingly painted onto the drum

by hands uncertain of their own worth.

Where did I learn this feeling from?

โ€œI threw your drum awayโ€

was so casually said to me,

that even Sans Serif wasnโ€™t ready

to relay that pain in the third degree.

As hard as my heart sank

when I read those words,

I was assured that there were

no more loose ends

to tie tightly around my neck.

No more olive branches left to extend.

You were finally gone.

In the mirror, my wholeness was reflected.

My heart, it healed.

Itโ€™s stronger than I expected.
