Established in Canada in 1998 by the League of Canadian Poets, National Poetry Month takes place every April and brings together schools, publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, communities and poets from across the country to celebrate poetry and its vital place in Canada's culture.

NPM25: Family
Celebrate National Poetry Month 2025 using the theme FAMILY in its many forms: found and chosen family, birth family, and family that defies categorization.
This April, turn to poetry to celebrate, cherish, mourn, critique, and explore the myriad bonds that family forms in our lives. Parents, pets, friendships, soulmates, siblings, plants, and beyond: the League invites you to examine the shape of family in your life now, to witness the intergenerational impact of ancestors, and to consider the role of family in generations to come.

Célébrez le mois national de la poésie 2025 qui a comme thème la FAMILLE dans ses nombreuses formes : famille choisie et retrouvée, famille de naissance, et la famille qui défie toute catégorisation.
Cet avril, tournez-vous vers la poésie pour célébrer, apprécier, chagriner, critiquer, et explorer la multitude de liens que la famille crée dans nos vies. Parents, animaux de compagnie, amitiés, âmes sœurs, frères et sœurs, plantes, et au-delà : la Ligue vous invite à examiner la place que la famille a dans votre vie présentement, d’être témoins à l’impact intergénérationnel de nos ancêtres, et à considérer le rôle de la famille dans les générations à venir.
Posters and bookmarks
Each year, the League of Canadian Poets selects a theme to ground our conversations, inspirations, and focus of National Poetry Month. LCP produces posters and bookmarks reflecting this theme, which are free to request for your home, school, library, or community!
Orders close in January and ship in early March.

Chaque année, la Ligue des poètes canadiens choisit une thématique pour faire converger nos conversations, et nos inspirations pendant tout le mois d’avril. Que ce soit pour vous, votre école, votre bibliothèque, ou votre communauté, le Mois national de la poésie vous enverra gratuitement, sur demande, des signets et des affiches reflétant notre thématique.

Event funding
Financement pour événements
The League of Canadian Poets offers annual funding for poetry events that take place during National Poetry Month.
National Poetry Month funding opens to applications from January 15 to February 15 annually, supporting digital and in-person events anywhere in Canada that celebrate NPM; open to non-members and associate members)
La Ligue des poètes canadien offre du financement annuel pour créer des événements poétiques pendant le Mois national de la poésie.
Les demandes de financement devront être envoyées entre le 15 janvier et le 15 février incluant les projets numériques et les événement en personnes. Ce financement est ouvert aux non-membres et aux membres associés.

Poem in Your Pocket Day
Journée du poème à porter
Held in the last two weeks of National Poetry Month, Poem in Your Pocket Day is an international movement that encourages people to centre poetry within their daily interactions.
On PIYP Day, select a poem, carry it with you, and share it with others at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, coffee shops, street corners, and on social media using the hashtag #PocketPoem.
This annual initiative is organized by the Academy of American Poets, celebrated with a free downloadable PDF booklet containing contemporary American and – since the League joined forces in 2016 – Canadian poetry to share.
La Journée du poème à porter est un événement auquel toutes et tous peuvent participer en partageant leur amour de la poésie. Pour cette adaptation francophone de l’événement Poem in Your Pocket Day, qui se tient le dernier jeudi du mois d’avril, La poésie partout propose une sélection de textes de poètes du Québec, du Canada francophone et des Premières Nations. Tout le monde peut porter un poème, sans le dire à personne, ou bien en utilisant le mot-clic #poèmeàporter.
Depuis 2017, La poésie partout organise la Journée du poème à porter parmi ses multiples activités de diffusion et de dissémination de la poésie.
