The Midnight Beach

By Sienna Joshi

The moon is molten, waltzing

on the sand with shadows of death

to the rhythm of the wavesโ€™ silent

echolalia; robust shells engulfed

by plump soles stagger

with prudence to meet the tide

in earnest,

forsaking its rotting flesh. The beach

maunders in cursiveโ€”gorged

with the nightโ€”whispering

hymns of repose and leisure evermore, except

for the day. It terrifies

you because you canโ€™t swim

but still you stay.
