This white

By Louise Carson

This white is hard and difficult to approach.

Morning after morning, there it is,

sends you back to bed with legs that ache

from yesterdayโ€™s shovelling.

But itโ€™s your eyes that suffer most.

It glares like an angry teacher,

makes you blink, shrink back.

And you feel with a shiver,

youโ€™re used to always being cold,

except for those delicious few moments, when, just waking,

youโ€™re naked, warm, not old.
